Five Common Causes of Knee Pain

Millions of people around the world live with daily knee pain. For most people, it will subside eventually, but for others, it’s a chronic ordeal. Read on to learn about five common causes of knee pain and what can be done to manage it.  

1. Arthritis 

There are several types of arthritis that can lead to knee pain, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and gout. But the most common form is osteoarthritis, which is characterized by the gradual loss of cartilage between joints. 

Arthritis is most common in people over the age of 50, but you can develop it at any point in your life, especially if you have a history of experiencing knee injuries.  

2. Injury 

With so many moving parts in your knee, there is a lot of room for something to go awry. Common knee injuries include sprained muscles and ligaments, a torn ACL or meniscus, knee bursitis, and fractures. If you suspect you have a knee injury, get a doctor to examine it right away to avoid more serious complications. 

Certain sports, such as basketball, soccer, and football, put players at an increased risk of knee injuries due to the technical footwork and tricky maneuvers they are required to execute. 

3. Tendonitis 

Tendonitis occurs when a tendon becomes inflamed. In the knee, it is common for the tendon that attaches your kneecap to your shin bone to become inflamed when it is overused. This can lead to discomfort and pain and, if ignored, can lead to more serious problems, such as tendon tears. 

Acute knee pain from tendonitis and minor injuries can usually be relieved using over-the-counter pain relievers. 

4. Overuse 

Your body is not immune to wear and tear. As you age, your joints, especially your knees, start to feel the impact of your movements more. Over-exerting yourself can lead to inflammation and acute knee pain. 

5. Iliotibial Band Syndrome 

There is a thick band of tissue that connects the outside of your hip to the outside of your knee. When this band, known as the iliotibial band, becomes stretched too tight, it can rub against bone and cause pain and discomfort.
